The paper presents the main approaches to the question of the importance of new religious movements (NRMs) to society. Analyzed the relation between the three main functions of the NSD - integrative, disintegrative and transformed. A concept of lacunary NSD operation, the basic niche / gaps in institutional religion - Orthodoxy.
